May 28th – please shoot me – we’ve got to go buy groceries – no milk, bread, eggs, water, potatoes, fruit—you get the picture—so &^%$%^&*&* - off to Rapid City for groceries (nothing closer.) Alright so I survived grocery shopping and we’ve put everything up (and wasted a half day – sorry can’t help myself.) Okay can we please now go have some fun—please. Hooray – off to Custer State Park to check out the visitor center- want all sorts of information on the trails, wildlife, out of the way places, kayaking, and any other information we can get. Nice day and Noel has taken his window out of the jeep (can you believe the man is making me drive so he can look around for once.) Now I know we got close to the bison in the Badlands but let’s just say obviously this was not close enough. Around the corner I go at a breathtaking 18mph and right on the side of the road- literally standing on the road’s shoulder are three enormous bison. Noel is going to explode --he’s grabbing the camera, telling me to stop, throwing around the stuff on the dashboard to find the other lens all the while the bison keep walking closer and closer. Now get this, the man leans out the jeep (remember no window) balances the camera on the side mirror and is taking close up face shots of these bison—I swear if he wanted he could have reached out and touched that bison’s horn. Yes, yes he wanted to get out but that was difficult to do with a desperate 120 pound women clutching frantically to him –lol. Seriously never did either of us think we would ever be face to face with bison- boy do I wish we owned a tank!!! Saw several more bison along with deer and pronghorn as we continued this beautiful drive through just a small portion of Custer State Park. We can’t wait to explore every nook and cranny.
